Quiet the mind and the soul will speak.
– Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati
The benefits of meditation are vast, and are still being constantly studied.
One of the most interesting studies was carried out by Yale University which discovered that mindfulness meditation decreased activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN). This is the network within your brain that is responsible for mind-wandering and self-referential thoughts, also affectionately referred to as ‘The Monkey Mind’.
The DMN is ‘ON’ when we’re not thinking about anything in particular, when our mind and thoughts are wandering. This state can be linked to ruminating and worrying about the past or future and feeling less happy. Through meditation it appears that we can affectively ‘turn down’ this DMN activity by creating new connections and re-wiring our brains.
